Ah, James... if you were to argue that the SEC and Pac 10 are better and deeper than the Big Ten this year, then I would completely agree with you. Yet, until the Big East teams start putting together non-conference schedules that don't uniformly include the Little Sisters of the Poor, I can't respect their records. South Florida is very likely to lose a game (maybe this very week against Rutgers), which will make the conference's perception drop very quickly. South Florida and WVU might qualify to be in the top half of the Big Ten this season, but I don't for a second believe that the rest of the Big East is anywhere close to as deep as the Big Ten. The strength of a conference is based on depth, not one or two teams at the top (although in case you haven't noticed, a Big Ten team sits at #1 right now).

I don't get Mountaineers fans, either. I received almost the exact same comment from another WVU fan on my college football preview last year, even though the one item that I actually DID get correct in two consecutive years was that West Virigina was overrated in the sense that they wouldn't make the national championship game just because of an easy schedule and would lose at least one game to derail any championship hopes. Not once did I even hint at the thought that Illinois would beat West Virginia head-to-head (I've been predicting that the Illini would make the Motor City Bowl, for Pete's sake), only that West Virginia was overrated in comparison with the other national championship contenders, which has turned out to be true in consecutive seasons. So, at least I got that particular pre-season evaluation right two years in a row.

Pshhhh....so much for your pre-season evaluation of the BCS. Who'd have thought that the Big East would make the Big Ten look like the Little Ten. /shrug Guess that's what happens when you rest on your laurels. BTW, WVU would kick the crap out of the Illini.

As as insufferable Cubs fan, I feel compelled to point out that the barely above .500 Cardinals won last year's World Series. (Lord, it pains me to type that.) It could happen again! (Right?)
